Jimmy Poulos

Once Upon a Time…..
There was a little Greek boy named Demetrios Xanthopoulos, who lived with his family in Brisbane. When Demetrios started school he couldn’t help but notice most of the other boys and girls didn’t really look too much like him, or any of his family. These kids were all blonde, and none of them had moustaches (like Demetrious did), either.
If it is true Australian children (like the adults) express affection by teasing and taunting, then Demetrious was clearly a much loved boy. He grew up unbowed by it, however. Calling forward the spirit of his Greek ancestors he used humour as his shield, wit as his ammunition, and rapid fire delivery as a weapon. This triad of skills became ever stronger as the years went on, and perhaps it was his ability at the verbal joust that led to social acceptance; mayhap ‘twas the ‘getting the laugh’ that got him through…
Most likely though, it’s coz he changed his name…
Jimmy Poulos – Comedian.
After a start in the entertainment industry as a Rock and Roll drummer, Jimmy discovered comedy quite by accident one night in the 1980’s – He’d been seduced by a slick, um, blackboard outside a pub (this was the 80’s, remember!) that said ‘Comedy Club’ – inside he saw people on stage doing what he’d been doing all his life. The verbal gladiator again awoke, and the rest, as they say, is in the next paragraph as this is a bio and that’s how they work.
Fast forward to the present day, where Jimmy Poulos is a strong presence in the Qld Comedy scene. It’s been a long and varied career, with some of the highlights, (right from the top), being:
Regular character Actor Channel 7’s Wombat – Jimmy was always the bad guy!
Presenter on Great South East (Also Channel 7)
Headliner on the FMV TV Comedy Special (Channel 7 again!)
TV Commercials for Yellow Taxi’s, Toyota, and a lot of other Really Big Companies, AND they appeared on ALL channels! Except the ABC. And SBS, of course… oh, and community channels. And Cable. But still lots!
Jimmy has played almost every Comedy club to open (and close!) in Brisbane over the past 15 years. Along the way he’s headlined the Major Comedy Clubs around Australia and New Zealand, performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and developed a reputation as an excellent corporate MC and Comedian having entertained a varied clientele, which even includes Her Excellency, the Governor of Qld Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce.
Jimmy Poulos – A consummate professional years before he could spell it!
